The Sound of Music, and the Music of Sound

]]>

Can you describe your life history through a soundtrack? Or at least reflect specific periods or events in your life through a series of individual songs, CDs, play lists, or musical pieces? Most of us growing up in Western cultures who have had any exposure to pop culture entertainment… certainly can.

Can music influence people to make choices, make changes, & build motivational states?

Of course it can. Just as music can hinder us if we let it, or (as some people unfortunately do) if we invite such.

I can remember getting ready to graduate from high school at about the time the movie (& song) “St. Elmo’s Fire” came out, which was about finding purpose. I remember it to this day, and nowadays, anytime a radio station happens to play that song, memories come flooding back, and emotions flare.

I can remember my first relationship breaking-up and playing songs about wanting a second chance. (I can also remember lots of reasons that I’m glad I never got one!).

Every time I hear ANY of the songs made popular by the Rocky films, or for example the theme song to Chariots of Fire by Vangelis, I get a boost of motivational and inspirational energy. Don’t you?

Sounds not only reflect feelings… they can create them.

In NLP terms we would call these sounds or songs “anchors” for the feelings they elicit. But that’s not the only mechanism at work — there is another form of “synesthesia” where sounds directly create sensations, virtually instantly, inside our bodies. In other words, I’m not only speaking of the effect of an experiential trigger (song) leading on to an emotional response (feeling), but also the effect of how sensory vibration can directly affect our bodies in interesting ways.

I believe that the sounds we hear — even new ones we don’t yet recognize from memories — influence us through rhythm, resonance, vibration & more. I think different areas of our bodies respond differently to each instrument, to each different frequency of sound we hear. Sometimes hearing almost anything a specific instrument might plays… can feel good. I know people who absolutely cannot listen to a harmonica — just the sound of it (not the musical style, but the quality of any harmonica notes) drives them batty. By contrast, I personally experience great sensations just while listening to a note played by a Harpsichord. Any note. Any piece, doesn’t matter — for me, the sound of a harpsichord feels good. (almost as good as listening to Joe Satriani play… virtually anything on his guitar).

Maybe this level of synesthesia is unusual for you, or maybe you’ve had this experience all your life. I don’t know, which is partly why I’m writing this. But I learned early on — maybe by the age of 5, that I can play the notes in any octave “in my body” by creating brief tension in specific muscles/joints all across the line from one hand through my arms & chest over to the other hand. So I could listen to music and play the notes I’d heard, in my body, at the same time. At first I probably looked a little restless or spasmodic, LOL!, but eventually I got those little sensations down to unnoticeable fast twitches. And pretty soon I could play anything in my head/body, real-time.

I had more fun with this in a different way with the song “Oh Yeah” by the band “Yello.” “Oh Yeah” was made popular in a number of movies, perhaps most notably in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” It’s an addictively catchy tune. And one strange and creative day about 11 years ago when I was first learning NLP, I found a way to play each instrument in the tune, with a different movement or body part. And then I’d replay the song, learning to stay with the various different instruments and play the song accurately, somatically. (What can I tell you, I’m a little strange, and there’s almost nothing I won’t do to push the envelope a bit for your gain!) Took me literally a couple of hours before I could play the whole song, somatically, and accurately. But here’s the fun part. Now, I can be sitting on an airplane, or on a train, or in an automobile(!), and absolutely silently play “Oh Yeah” at full volume in my head & body, and hear every single instrument & note, and even more strangely — I’ll also know precisely whether I’ve played it correctly or otherwise. And every time, I end up with the kind of smile that makes people think I’ve got something up my sleeve. And of course, I did have something up my sleeve — both a synthesized C-sharp, & a high-hat.

Now, all of that is mostly just fun storytelling that shares with you some of the odd explorations I engage in. Now let’s look at more pragmatic conclusions we might be able to draw about sound and synesthesia, and…

Here is some of how all this impacts our own lives, and the lives of everyone around us.
Life Area #1: Business / Work / Career

A) How productive is your work environment? Is it filled with either the sounds of productivity? Or other music that is known to improve productivity? Endless studies have been done of how much certain kinds of music changes moods, improves sales or productivity, communication, & more. Get educated and make sure your environment is optimally “sounded” for best results.

B) How’s YOUR Voice? If you communicate to others, and you still haven’t taken a long hard listen to how your voice sounds, or gotten feedback from people who don’t owe you anything or have to brown nose you for a living… you need to stop hindering yourself and get my Voice CD-sets. Seriously. How would it be to begin to get out of your own way? Wouldn’t it be incredibly valuable? Realistically, at least 95% of the people I encounter, even in NLP circles, could take some simple measures — to get better results with their own voices. They’re spending huge amounts on determining what to say & when, and then delivering all those skills — through a crappy vocal instrument. We truly cannot afford NOT to know how our voice may be reducing our value to other people.

Life Area #2: Personal Life

“Sexy People Sound Better” – or so says an article that was recently published in LiveScience! (Clicking on the article title will open a new window)

And there’s another article there too you might want to read: “Deep-Voiced Men Have More Kids” (Sept 2007) (Clicking on the article title will open a new window)

I think these are both absolutely fascinating studies that, in my opinion, give exceedingly positive validation and credibility to all the work I do with helping you to develop your voice into an irresistible instrument!

Daily, through my products & seminars, I help people sound significantly better.

I use my ear, I use highly unique vocal exercises you can’t find elsewhere. And I use voice synthesizers & a PA system and an oscilloscope and a histogram, and “voice impression” training (amongst other approaches).

I can make ANYONE’S voice deeper. And not just barely — not just a little bit. But I know ways of getting you to reach significantly lower registers (with practice, you can make it permanent). And deeper voices are more desireable in BOTH men & women.

I wanted you to see these articles on the profound impact the quality of your voice has on your life (it’s not just a mild effect!) — my courses can help not only your professional sound/image — but also your sex life! For convenience, here are some of my product seminars in this area of study:

seminar: Finding Your Irresistible Voice

CD-Sets: Finding Your Irresistible Voice, & Irresistible Voice 2

Finally, if you think what you need is private vocal coaching in person or over the web/phone, contact me. Let’s discuss your goals!

Tying Voice Improvement back in to causing certain body sensations in others:

I think that training ourselves to be far more attentive to others even as we speak to them, can enable us to find… specific sounds/tones/vibrations in our own voices… that can cause better or worse sensations in people as they listen to us.

Musicians well know that sometimes, just changing the key of a musical piece by just one single note — can be enough to change the entire emotional tone of that piece. This is neither accidental, nor just a passing mild effect. This is HUGE!

It means that hope is NOT lost. If you have a bad voice — if your pitch or tonality is turning people off — sometimes just changing things a little bit can be enough to generate entirely different responses.

You might wish to begin thinking of the responses people have as not so much rational choices.. but as neurological ones. And you CAN change how you affect other people’s neurology — dramatically.

If you’ve been harboring any particular voice concerns… and are finally so fed up with your voice doing nothing to improve your charisma (or worse, hurting it!), email me with a specific list of your own vocal grievances. You CAN get your own vocal breakthrough & increase your charisma and influence. Do allow me some time to respond, though, because my email account fills up constantly. There is hope for _everyone_ — because I can improve anyone’s voice!

Synthesizer Filters: Key Sound Design Element

Edit Article |

]]>

Filters are one of the key elements in the sound of any synthesizer. The use of synthesizer filters is not only to control sound but they can also add character to recorded acoustic- instrument tracks. A filter acts as a signal processor. When input is fed into the system, it may be from the oscillators of the synthesizer, or a recorded track or even a live music and it automatically changes the signal in some way. To be more specific, a synthesizer filter changes the frequency contour of a signal.

In the earlier days, filters characterized the sound of the synthesizers more than anything else. Now, with the advancement of technology, much-expanded sound capacity models, the use of filters may have reduced a little, but it is still a key element in sound design.

Synthesizers filters can be described by how they have an effect on different parts of the frequency spectrum. These filters are of different kinds with respect to their controls of frequencies. A Lowpass filter reduces the level of higher frequencies while leaving lower frequencies unchanged. This is similar to that of the treble control on your stereo. A highpass filters do the opposite. A bandpass and band-reject filters reduce the level of frequencies inside or outside of a frequency band. Lowpass filters are the most common kind of filters.

A synthesizer filter can be switchable among the above-mentioned modes of filters, which includes the Lowpass filters, highpass filters, and a bandpass and band rejects filters. There can also be several other types of filters to be arranged in series, to operate it successively or to arrange parallel to operate it simultaneously.

The prize of a synthesizer can vary from another one depending on the distinctive sound of their filters. The synthesizer filter is one of the key elements in the sound of any synthesizer.

In case of a digital synthesizer filter it will not only enable you to set the frequency but also enable you to set the waveform, number of channels, and other properties through the property page. They enable you to vary the basic waveforms to some extent and smooth out the edges of the original waveform. Take for instance, if you listen to a sawtooth wave, you will find it rather harsh this is because the waveform has a lot of sharp edges. These edges are in the acoustic terminology called overtones and they can be removed by applying a filter to a waveform.

Synthesizer filter effect varies with the pitch of the sound being filtered. And there is a setting called keyboard tracking or pitch tracking to perform this job. It can determine how much the filter cutoff frequency is affected by the pitches being played. The keyboard tracking range can vary from 0 to 2, which means no tracking or cutoff increased to twice as fast as the pitch respectively.

There is an endless list of what synthesizer filters can do. There are no limitations as to what they can perform to produce a better sound. They have the abilities to remove parts of the audio spectrum and create new tones from the old.

Getting Into Sound And Music Production – Making Your Own Studio At Home

October 20, 2010 in Local Music by stagemaster

Are you planning to set up a music studio at home? Well, it is not as difficult to pull off as you might think. True, the number of equipments found scattered around the studio floor of a professional can look rather intimidating to a beginner. However, you will not need that much equipment to start recording your own music tracks.

So, what is needed to set up a beginner’s music studio?

First things first, make a checklist from the items given below. These are the equipments that you must have in your studio if you plan to do digital audio recording of any kind. It may be a tad expensive, but it will be very difficult to pull off a good work without these basic components. Here are the equipments that you simply cannot work without:

1. Microphones: Well, of course these are amongst the most important equipments in your starter setup. After all, how are you supposed to sing the vocals without a microphone? When you purchase one, make sure that it is compatible with digital audio equipment like amplifiers, and sound mixers. Besides, make sure what type of microphone you will need. If you are going to use acoustic guitars and similar high frequency music equipment, invest in a condenser microphone. Otherwise, a dynamic microphone will be cheaper and get you by.

2. Pre-amplifiers: These will help in amplifying the sound of the vocalist’s voice, automatically suppressing some of the background noises in the process. These are your second most important equipments after the microphones. High quality pre-amps can be real wallet-burners though, so keep your budget in mind when shopping for one.

3. Sound cards: You must have one of these if you wish to record music digitally. Go for a low priced one if you are a genius at using audio mixing software. However, if you are not that sure about using audio manipulating software, then it is best to go for the expensive varieties.

4. Computer: Well, of course, you will need a computer with sound cards and audio editing software installed, in order to digitally master the audio tracks you create. Besides, a computer makes the task of remixing a song a snap. However, if you do not wish to edit your own tracks in any way, then simply investing in a hard disk recorder will get the job done, for the time being. Remember though, you will have to live with the noises and disturbances in the background of your audio tracks.

5. Monitor speakers: No, these are not related to monitors that allow you to see what is happening in a computer. Monitor speakers allow you to listen to audio streams and spot discrepancies easily. Some experienced sound mixing professionals claim that they can get the job done with headphones, but it is more difficult to pull off without really good experience in the field.

6. Room acoustics: This is perhaps the most neglected part of an audio recording setup, even by some professionals. However, spending time and money over designing the inside structure of a proper studio is a worthwhile investment. Try not to skimp on this if you wish to do some serious audio recording in future.

These are the bare bone components of a music studio. A good home studio is a genuine asset for any budding musician. Build yours today, and start creating magic using your talent and skills.

Music Production & Sound Engineering Tutorial – Noise Reduction – Cleaning a Sound File

September 12, 2010 in Local Music by stagemaster

Helo and welcome!

For this tutorial i am using a sound file of a vocal recording. I will be using ‘adobe audition’ to edit this sound file. ‘Adobe audition’ is a popular brand of multi track recording software. This software allows you to record, edit and mix sound files/recordings. It has loads of tools to edit/engineer your sound files exactly as you would like them to be.

This tutorial will show you how to use the noise reduction tool to remove unwanted sounds/background noise from a recording or any sound file. I am using adobe audition for this example but any decent sound editor will have this tool.

The first step is to identify an appropriate section of the sound file that contains the noise. A good area to find is that which represents a pause between the speech/vocal. Just like when you take a pause between your sentences or words when you are speaking normally. It is useful to zoom in using the software to get a nice clear view of the part u would like to work with. This is the section that will be used to clean up the entire sound file. Once you have zoomed in on your chosen section it will be apparent that where it should be a silent pause there is actually a quiet noise. This is the section that we will sample and then remove from the entire sound file.

In most cases when you record any sound there is usually a quiet hiss or humming (noise) that can be heard during playback. This can come from the recording equipment itself or from background sounds that are within the range of the recording equipment. It is generally regarded as noise because these are usually unwanted sounds.

As well as noise you will also find other quiet looking parts of the sound file that represent the sound of someone breathing in. You will usually see these breath sounds just before a vocal part begins. These breath sounds will always be recorded with voice recordings unless you use a microphone that only records outward sound. Another option is to have a very skilled vocalist! Some people choose to remove or reduce the volume of this breath sound but that should only be done after you have removed the underlying noise of the entire track first.

So now we will remove the noise!

Highlight the silent pause/noise. This is done in the exact same manner as you would highlight text in a text document. Be careful not to select any of the vocal part when making your selection. You may want to zoom in to guarantee your accuracy for this part of the process. To sample this noise in ‘adobe audition’ right-click on that highlighted section and click on “capture noise profile” from the menu that appears.

This tells the software (adobe audition) what you consider to be the noise (sound frequencies that you would like to remove or reduce). The next step is to to go ahead and remove this noise from the entire sound file. In ‘adobe audition’ this is done by using the noise reduction tool.

Which ever sound editing software u decide to use within your studio setup the method may vary slightly but the basic steps and terminology will be very similar.

Next, click on the “effects” menu at the top of the screen and then click on noise reduction from the menu that appears. Once you have done this a new window will appear. This window represents the noise reduction tool and displays all the options and relevant information about that tool. The noise that you captured earlier will be the default noise used by this tool. You can either completely remove the noise or you can just reduce the noise to an acceptable level using the “noise reduction level” variable shown in the image. If you click on the preview button you can listen to what the alterations will sound like before permanently applying them. This is useful to fine tune the amount of effect you want to apply.

It is important to take care and listen carefully at this stage of the process because sometimes it is possible to apply too much noise reduction. This can effect the overall sound of the file in a way that you did not intend. Once you are happy with the settings click on the OK button and the noise will be removed. Magic!

You will then see complete silence where the silent pauses between the vocal waveforms are. At this stage you will have successfully removed the unwanted noise from the entire length of sound file. This can be seen most clearly by the completely flat line (zero decibels/volume) where the pauses are. At this point you may choose to adjust the volume of the breath sounds discussed earlier if you feel it is appropriate.

It is useful to get rid of noise within all of your vocal recordings because when you have several vocal tracks playing at once it also means you have several layers of noise. This noise can easily go un noticed but it can sometimes slightly muffle other sounds/frequencies such as your musical parts or beats. When dealing with mastering, mixing and balancing the whole mix this is a useful and important tool for a quality production and allows the beat/music to be heard crystal clear.

This informative lesson is to help you to become a highly skilled sound engineer and to create/edit your sounds to perfection.

The Reliability of Analogue Reel to Reel Tape Recorders in Modern Day Sound Recording

September 12, 2010 in Gear by stagemaster

The larger reel-to-reel recorders are still employed by professional sound specialists, although the basic cassette recorder is probably the cheapest form of analogue recorder which is readily available. The quality of these reel to reel machines can seldom be duplicated by the smaller recorders and their cassette tapes.

A multitude of different media’s still utilise analogue recording, which is the oldest standard in audio recording based terms. Analogue style reel-to-reel recorders are still in mainstream use these days and are still considered by some as the preferred equipment for sound recordings.

The advantages of reel to reel tape recording systems are generally the far better quality recordings and the fact that the tapes can be easily edited. However, because of economic reasons the cassette recorder is by far a more common analogue recording system than the more expensive, heavier and bulkier reel-to-reel recorders.

Although digital reel to reel recorders are more the norm now analogue reel to reel recorders are still used for master studio recording They are the clear choice of professional recordists since the quality of these machines can seldom be duplicated by the smaller recorders and their cassette tapes.

Reel reel tape recorders are capable of recording sonically challenging sounds that most cassette recorders cannot record accurately and the tape transport mechanisms of these machines, which are also known as open-reel recorders, are virtually immune to humidity-related problems. They have wider tape width and faster linear tape speeds than cassette recorders; they offer the widest frequency bandwidth, greatest fidelity, and best signal-to-noise ratios of any analogue recorder.

Whereas digital recordings can become unusable in any number of ways, not least where the hardware and software they are based on becomes obsolete, analogue reel-to-reel recorders offer proven reliability to researchers and recordists even under the harshest conditions.

Many recording artists, even today, prefer the natural, warm sound of reel to reel player recorders and many rock and blues artists find the unique form of distortion, caused by tape saturation, very pleasing. The illusion of a fuller sound, which is a more natural effect to the human ear, is created by the harmonic distortion, which causes the high end to become slightly depressed and the bass to thicken up. It is not uncommon for artists to re-record digital tracks to analogue reels.

Reel to reel tape recorders are still a popular way to record and listen to music sound tracks and it is still possible to acquire models that have been manufactured by Akai, Pioneer, Ampex, Revox, Sony, Teac, Toshiba and many others.

Although they are getting a little hard to find and can be rather expensive in some cases, analogue reel to reel recorders are still available today and issues regarding maintenance or repair should not be a major concern as tapes, parts and components are still available.
