It’s very informative. I wish it had more on rebiasing an amp, but according to people I talked to, that would take a whole-nother book. Other than that it was great.

Dave Hunter certainly has his share of reiterated opinion in this book. I tire easily when forced to read the same thing said slightly differently three times in as many pages, but hey! if I were being paid by the word, I might think differently about employing repetition as a tactic first thought of by the writers of the Holy Bible!
The author does put up some good points while being extra careful not to encroach on anyone else’s Grail of sound. Transistors OK! They have their place, DSP multi FX? Cool with me. But really it all comes down to a handful of components and a few well placed tube preamp stages, throw in a couple of 30 pound transformers, and be sure to crank that plate voltage up!
Anyway, this book doesn’t say that much that is new in the genre, and the padding out of the same ideas is tiresome, but the real reason I’m not going to suggest buying this book is his reference to great guitarist’s that set the tone for the rest to follow: Paul Bloomfield?
Come on, Dave. Even I know you’re probably thinking of Michael Bloomfield, who played with (among others) Paul Butterfield (who is mostly a vocalist and (Mouth)Harp player. But Michael Bloomfield, a truly astounding guitarist who is sadly no longer with us deserves his due, even in such a boring text as this one is. Research is vital, my old English teacher used to say (at least three times – Hey I wonder if Mr. Hunter had the same teacher?!).

Purchased this book on the recommendation of a guitar forum member who I trust. This book gives a very good basic description of the parts of a tube guitar amplifier amplifier and what they do and how they effect the output and tone of an amp. Would have liked to have seen more troubleshooting and repair information, but this was not the purpose of this book. I would recommend this as a first book for the person who wants to learn the basics of how a tube amplifier works. Then move on to a more technical book if you want to learn more.

This is a pretty good book, the reading is good and it is laid out in a way that I can learn something from the ground up. Sometime down the road when I have the scratch, this book will help me build my own tube amp from scratch.

Very clear and helpful. A little more background than technical information, but great for beginners.
